Brake Drum Relining Procedure
Materials Needed
- Drum brake shoes
- Drill
- Drill bit equal to the shoe's hole size
- Brake reline kit
- Safety glasses
- Gloves
Step-by-Step Procedures
1. Safety First
Before starting, ensure you wear safety glasses and gloves to protect yourself from dust and debris.
2. Remove the Drum
Remove the drum from the vehicle by following the manufacturer's instructions. Make sure to place the drum on a stable surface for easy access.
3. Inspect the Drum
Carefully inspect the drum for any signs of wear, cracks, or heat checks. If there are significant issues, it may need to be replaced.
4. Drill the Holes
If the holes in the brake shoes do not align perfectly with the holes in the drum, use a drill to enlarge them. Ensure you use a drill bit that matches the size of the shoe holes to create perpendicular holes.
5. Clean the Surface
Clean the surface of the drum and brake shoes to remove any dirt or debris that could interfere with bonding.
6. Apply the Adhesive
Apply the brake reline adhesive to the surface of the brake shoes where the new lining will be attached.
7. Install the Lining
Place the new brake lining over the adhesive, ensuring it aligns correctly with the holes. Use a hammer or press to firmly secure the lining in place.
8. Cure the Adhesive
Allow the adhesive to cure completely based on the manufacturer's instructions. This typically requires several hours to overnight.
9. Reinstall the Drum
Once the adhesive is fully cured, place the drum back onto the vehicle following the manufacturer's instructions.
10. Test and Inspect
Conduct a road test to ensure the relined brake shoes are functioning correctly. Inspect the brakes regularly for any signs of wear or damage.
